AyandesS asked:

I understand to get an employee’s discount, I need to get a card. To get a card, I need a credit score of at least 500. To get that I need a bank account. I don’t have a bank account. I just started working at Macy’s and I’d like to know what I can do to get the discount without the card. I work at Macy’s West in California if it helps.

I don’t think they are refering to a credit card. It is probably an employee card, like a time-clock card, or just a little paper card with your employee number and name.

I would think it would be illegal for them to require a credit card in order for you to receive an EMPLOYEE discount.

however, they may have a store credit card that can maximize your employee discount, or offer just “A” discount, by forcing you to charge it to the credit card. These are very common with stores like JC Penney, Mervyn’s, Nordstroms, Macy’s, etc. They usually do something like a point system (for every $100 you spend, you get a $5 off coupon) and then once or twice a year you get a 10-15% extra discount if you charge it to the card. Those cards are available to both employees and shoppers, and it is not considered an “employee discount”. It is a “rewards program”.

Those store credit cards have ridiculous interest rates, usually around 30%, so unless you are diligent about paying it off at the cash register after using it, you could end up in serious debt.

So if Macy’s is requiring a credit card to get an employee discount, that is unlawful, and I would question it. They can give you an “extra” discount if you have the store credit card, but the main employee discount is usually seperate, with a seperate little card that is NOT a credit card.

I should also point out that they aren’t required to offer a discount to employees, but if they do it should not be through a credit card.

ADD: I looked it up. The card you are refering to is the red rewards card, and employees who sign up for the card receive an extra discount if they charge their purchase to the credit card. I don’t know how it works, as I never worked for Macy’s. But I would seriously question them if they make you apply for a credit card in order to receive employee rewards. That is totally ridiculous.

ADD: Ok I just talked to my friend who works at Macy’s. They do require a credit card in order to get the employee discount (which I think is stupid), but she told me you always get approved for the prepaid one. If I were you, I would get a bank account right snappy, since you need a place to put your paychecks I’m assuming. Even if you plan on spending the whole check on expenses, I wouldn’t want to carry that much cash around on me.

Wonder if you could get a “re-loadable” Visa?

I don’t know, but it might work?

and Yes, they are referring to a credit account. This is a practice that “macy’s” has been doing for YEARS! It is for in store loss prevention, and associate purchase tracking, too.

FWIW, the “card” in question is a standard Macy’s charge card.

I found a huge list of California credit card resources. Try calling a nearby service and they surely answer your questions.

In order to get the associate’s discount, you need to have the store (credit) card. However, you can get a pre-paid card instead and still get the discount. As far as I know, you get a 50$ credit limit with the pre-paid card so if you want to buy something that costs, say, 100$, you can just put 50$ on your card and then pay the other 50$ off later. Whenever you filled out the papers at Macy’s when you just got hired, I think there was a question about whether or not you want the “debit” or credit card. I’m not 100% positive on that, but I think that’s how it was with me. In any case, if you have any other questions, you should just ask at the HR.
