Plasma displays were invented in 1964 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by Donald Bitzer, H. Gene Slottow, and Robert Wilson for the PLATO Computer System. They probably did not know it at the time, but their display system would make a much bigger impact on the world itself than the PLATO Computer ever did. The very innovative display system was quite rugged and for a time,  plasma tv displays for computers were actually more popular than CRTs. However their thinness and large screens made them ideal for many other kinds of applications.
